The Viking World

A world connected as much by sea as by land, where a good ship can make distant coasts dangerously close.

The Known World

Ravenfjord lies among the fjords of Norway. Sweden and the Baltic lie east. Denmark commands the narrow seas to the south. Beyond are Frisia and the vast Frankish Realm. West across the North Sea lie England and Scotland, divided among kingdoms, fortified settlements, farms, monasteries, and wealthy churches. Ireland lies farther west.

The sea is a road, but never merely a road. Fog can hide a ship. Storms, currents, reefs, and poor visibility can turn a familiar crossing into a struggle for survival. News travels with merchants, sailors, warriors, pilgrims, captives, and wandering strangers.

The Thing (Þing)

The Thing is the public assembly of free people. Disputes are heard, agreements witnessed, judgments announced, compensation decided, and community matters discussed. Law depends upon custom, reputation, witnesses, oaths, kinship, and the community’s willingness to enforce judgment.

Law and Compensation

Many offenses can be settled through compensation rather than imprisonment. Paying silver can prevent an injury or killing from growing into a generations-long feud. Refusing a lawful settlement is far more serious.

The Lawspeaker

The lawspeaker is renowned for knowledge of customary law. He explains relevant custom and legal procedure, but does not dictate whatever verdict he wishes. His authority comes from knowledge and public recognition.

Witnesses and Oaths

A witnessed promise carries great weight. The sworn word of a respected householder, supported by reputable oath-helpers, means more than the unsupported claim of a notorious liar. Public promises are dangerous things.

Outlawry

An outlaw stands outside the protection of law. Property and legal protection may be lost, and anyone sheltering a full outlaw may create legal trouble for themselves.

The law no longer protects you.

The Thing is law court, political gathering, public forum, marketplace, meeting place, and social event. A sword can settle an argument quickly. The Thing determines what happens afterward.
