Chapter I

The Monastery Raid

For days the Sea Raven cut across the cold waters of the North Sea. The wind remained steady, and Odin favored the voyage. By day the crew saw only distant seabirds and the occasional fishing boat hugging the coast. At night the knarr was pulled ashore onto lonely beaches where small fires were hidden among the dunes and every warrior slept with shield and weapon close at hand.
